Interview with Björn from IN MOURNING!!

Bjorn-In-MourningIn Mourning is a progressive death metal band from Sweden. They are currently signed with the Norwegian label Aftermath Music.

Their first album, Shrouded Divine, released in January of 2008, has received mostly favorable reviews, especially by European music websites and magazines. Since a friend recommended them to me, i have been hooked up since, and I wanted to ask them some questions…

As one of the best newcomer bands from Sweden these last years, In Mourning proves it is still possible to write progressive and melodic death metal with originality and essence. Having the experience of five prior demos, the band has been going on since 2000, constantly writing new material and these last years also gaining experience as a live band.

A lot of people associate their sound as close to Opeth, but so far, whenever anyone listens to their music, they ask me one question: “Wow, since when did Opeth sound so good?!” Opeth is a great band and one of my favorites, and In Mourning sure have their distinct style, which I prefer sometimes.

I had a chance to have a word with Björn Pettersson, guitairst of In Mourning, and I asked him:

Salah: What’s new with In Mourning? And How’s was the tour coming along?

Björn: Well, at the moment we are working really hard on material for a new album, and it’s going very well. The new stuff feels great, it’s broader and at the same time more focused, it’s going to be killer.

As for touring, we haven’t very much planned at all right now, as we’re writing new stuff and focusing mainly on that. We’re always interested in gigs, and we’re always working, and trying our best, to find new chances to hit the stages. At this moment we have only a show in Norway coming up in december, but as said, we’re always trying to get out gigging more so keep your eyes open.

Salah:
As newcomers in Sweden, with your album released just earlier this year, how do you feel its all turning out?

Björn: It really feels like we have been taking a quite big leap forward with this album, we’ve been getting a big deal of good response in reviews, which feels great. Signing with Aftermath Music has helped us getting out with our music a lot, especially in taking our music outside of Sweden. Hopefully we can manage to get out doing a small tour or a couple of shows before we enter the studio to record the follow-up to ‘Shrouded Divine’, we are hoping to be able to enter studio sometime around spring/summer ’09.

Salah:
How do you describe the sound of In Mourning, apart from the band’s genre?

Björn:
It’s always a hard task to describe sounds with words. We are relying much on melancholy and atmospheres in songs. Of course also the heaviness is one quite big element in the music too, spanning from calm atmospheric parts to more brutal and progressive metal-parts. I think we may have a slightly more melodious approach than many of the other bands in today’s death-metal-scene, with a few exceptions of course.

Salah: Does In Mourning have plans for an international tour anytime soon? If so, would the band consider playing in the Middle East like in Dubai and Egypt, where the metal scene is constantly growing?

Björn: We have no really concrete plans for touring yet, although we have been talking a bit about ideas for touring with Aftermath. And we are quite eager to get out touring, although so far we haven’t really had any good opportunities to do that. Hopefully we will be able to plan something in early ’09 before beginning to record our next album. About the Middle East, we have no plans for going there so far, but if the opportunity would show up, we will of course go there.

Salah:
What bands are you currently listening to? What are you all-time favorites?

Björn:
We listen to a ton of different music in the band, and all of the band-members have quite diverse musical tastes. It all spans from melancholic pop, to brutal death metal, to post-rock, to prog-rock, to power-metal and so on… There are however certain bands that all of us in the band like, and I think much of the music that we all listen to contain quite a big deal of melancholy, which I also think is reflected in our own music.
To answer for myself I’m quite a big fan to the whole post-rock/post-metal scene.

Salah: Which band do you think are direct competition with In Mourning within Sweden?

Björn:
Well, I don’t really see any competition in our music-making. There are a lot of great metal-bands everywhere and Sweden is often considered a great metal-country, with the Gothenburg-bands and so on.
But I’d rather see all the good bands out there as inspiration than competition. Of course, with the opportunities that the internet brings to broadcast your own music, and the fact that it’s as easy to record descent recordings as it is today makes it quite hard to stick out with your band amongst all others. In that way it gets a bit competitive of course, but I’ve never felt that we have been looking at it that way, we shape our music to something we ourselves love, and we try to reach out with it as much as we can.

Salah: Any plans for In Mourning to shoot a video soon? If so, which song would it be?

Björn:
Nope, no plans for a video yet, we actually haven’t even been thinking about shooting a video. So there are no plans for what song a video would possibly be for or anything like that.
I think there will probably not be any video from our Shrouded Divine-album either, we’ll see what our next album brings.

Salah:
Some people are describing you as a new-coming younger Opeth. What do you think about that?

Björn:
I know a lot of people draw parallels from us to Opeth, lots of reviews tend to mention Opeth a lot as a reference, and in some ways I can understand that. In matter of describing sound, I suppose Opeth is one of the closest parallels you can get to describe our sound.
However I don’t really see too big similarities between us, I hear more differences than I hear similarities actually. But of course it’s a big honor to be called a “new-coming younger Opeth”, we love Opeth, but sounding like them is nothing we have any intentions to do, we want to do our own thing.

Thanks to Björn and In Mourning for taking the time to answer my questions. Hopefully, their upcoming album will be accompanied with a World tour, where they might drop by the next Dubai Desert Rock Festival!

Support Scarab On a Battle For WFF & DDRF!!!

scarab-promo

Yes! Scarab, the Egyptian Death Metal band… in United We Rock a fierce online battle of bands, and the winner gets to perform at the next WITH FULL FORCE (Germany) and DUBAI DESERT ROCK Festival!!!

Currently, the best known Arab bands in the battle are Scarab and Bilocate… Sorry Bilocate, I voted for Scarab. My Egyptian roots have influenced my decision, and I’m proud of them. I got to attend a couple of shows where Scarab were performing, and it was a blast, and since then they have been on my top bands list. What’s amazing about Scarab’s sound is the influence of their “Egyptianism” on the music, which creates a sound, totally new to the Death Metal genre.

Back to voting! It only requires you to vote ONCE and will not allow you to vote again, so its really a matter of 2 minutes and a couple of clicks.

This is probably offensive to you, I just warned.

Warning: This post contains language that some normal people would consider offensive, as well as images of heads getting blown up, people being cut into pieces while attempting to fly, and more sexual offenses.

I am not posting this for the video, more of for the song. The song really fits my mood now, and yeah I will cuss at everyone that attempts to talk to me today. But anyways, this is the greatest video made for this song on youtube, and is the most watched. It IS the reason many peoplecame to know the song, just like what happened with me. The song isn’t fairly new, but its that mood I’m in. It needs THIS! (With Lyrics)

I Just Want One Day Back…

You know what… even though everything is awesome with me right now, and I mean it, EVERYTHING…
University, friends, exams, weekends, outings, wasted time, and everything else…

BUT, I also have my low times, and yes this time its for no apparent reason…
I started digging up my old music, found some old Arabic Amr Diab stuff, and suddenly now I want to go back to 7th grade, my first year at AIS, with all my old friends that I lost contact with, and specifically to our first school field trip that year, do Durrat Al Arus in Obhur, Saudi Arabia… and just hang out there…

That’s all I’m asking for, just this specific day to come back again… And for those who know me since then know that I thought at the time that this year was pretty shitty, well now I still think that I’m way better off right now, because for once life is amazing and near perfect, but I still want this one day back. Is this too much to ask for?

I guess it is. Now I have to deal with myself in 10/11/2008. I can’t get 2001 back again 😦

Movie Review: Burn After Reading

burn-after-reading-poster

I don’t know if I should put a SPOILER ALLERT warning on top of this review, because I have no idea where this review is going. Yes, it is a spoiler by the way. It won’t make a big difference though, because there is really no story, so there’s nothing to be spoiled! I really don’t know what to say other than, for starters, this is surely one wicked movie!

If you’re wondering about the name, you’ll keep wondering. I actually watched the movie, and I have no freakin’ clue what it has to do with the movie. Like everything else (continue reading), it has nothing to do with anything anywhere. The poster? Fits the movie, big stars looking and being weird!

From the blend, it looks great… three Oscar-winning stars (George Clooney, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton), two Oscar-nominated co-stars (Brad Pitt and John Malkovich), and Oscar-winning writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen, straight from last spring’s Academy triumph with No Country for Old Men.

Big movie stars act like damn morons in this movie! Sure its fun to watch those stars act like fools in a movie like this one, but if you’re looking for a story, a happy ending, a sad ending, ANY ENDING AT ALL, or any sort of human connection, you have certainly paid 30LE to watch the wrong movie. 😛

Don’t get me wrong, I had fun watching the movie. Its a big mind twister. But usually, mind twisters have a story so complicated it makes u wonder. This one, on the other hand, makes you wonder… what the hell is all the fuss about!

I felt the need to comment on the synopsis before getting on with the review… my comments are in bold sqaure brackets…

Burn After Reading, a comedy thriller [huh!!] from Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, Fargo, The Big Lebowski), is world-premiering as the opening-night film of the 2008 Venice International Film Festival. [I wonder how that went!]

At the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency in Arlington, Va., analyst Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) arrives for a top-secret meeting. Unfortunately for Cox, the secret is soon out: he is being ousted. Cox does not take the news particularly well [yeah, he ends up saying the word Fuck more than 15 times in 2 minutes] and returns to his Georgetown home to work on his memoirs and his drinking, not necessarily in that order. His wife Katie (Tilda Swinton) is dismayed, though not particularly surprised; she is already well into an illicit affair with Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), a married federal marshal, and sets about making plans to leave Cox for Harry. [If you’re planning to watch the movie, take this from me, its all about the cheese Katie asked for and Ozzy didn’t get – just kidding…]

Elsewhere in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, and seemingly worlds apart, Hardbodies Fitness Centers employee Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) can barely concentrate on her work. She is consumed with her life plan for extensive cosmetic surgery, and confides her mission to can-do colleague Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt) [who also says the word shit between every 2 other words]. Linda is all but oblivious to the fact that the gym’s manager Ted Treffon (Richard Jenkins) pines for her [badly, I think he was in love with her] even as she arranges dates via the Internet with other men.

When a computer disc containing material for the CIA analyst’s memoirs [actually its just his stupid household financial shit, nothing important.] accidentally falls into the hands of Linda and Chad, the duo are intent on exploiting their find. As Ted frets, “No good can come of this,” events spiral out of everyone’s and anyone’s control [thats the confusion I’m talking about… I think!! :S ], in a cascading series of darkly hilarious encounters.” [darkly HILARIOUS!! It was funny, but in no way hilarious!!]
burn_after_reading_poster_1

So what happened? You get the feelling that you don’t know whats happening. What is the fuss about? The disc? Maybe. The cheese? Who knows! Everyone in the cast is sleeping with everyone else, 3 different stories are connected in a weird way, but the connection is in no way useful to the viewer, and it doesn’t serve the story at all…

Adultery, divorce, blackmail, treason, betrayal, Russians, breaking and entering and an extremely bizarre home-made sex toy are the order of the day. This may make it sound as if something important is at stake, but it ISN’T. No actual national secrets — just a disc with what two characters are convinced is highly classified material, but turns out to be something far less momentous. And since every spouse cheats and pursues or contemplates divorce, there’s not much at stake there either. Nothing in this movie is important AT ALL!

People are killed in weird ways. Yeah if you’re wondering, most of the cast died. How or why… NO CLUE! Investigation? Nope, just throw the bodies away… WTF! I am trying to narrate the story, and you’ll probably find other reviews that will, well those people had the time and effort to put this movie together, think about it, and write a review. I can’t, I simply can’t! It has strange meaningless twists, and things that appear to happen for no reason whatsoever!

The Coens have given all their lead characters absurd quirks. Harry is obsessed with potential food allergies and household flooring; Linda is fixated on body-image issues; Chad loses himself in iPod-accompanied aerobics; and Osborne seems awfully rash for a man in intelligence. The directors encourage their stars to play it broad, and they all paint the cartoons in loud colors. Clooney and McDormand have long displayed a knack for comedy, but the surprises here are Pitt, playing amusingly against his sex-symbol image, and Malkovich, who turns in the most consistently funny performance as an affronted egomaniac.

The Coen brothers definately had something in mind, and I’m still trying to figure out what it is. I feel that this is a really meaningless review, and I’m happy, becuase it fits the movie perfectly!

Bottom line, if you’re really free, or on a first date and need a movie to make fun of, or picked this out of 6 other movies at a theater for no apparent reason, or the three combined… Then go watch this movie. It’ll crack you up, make you think, go “WTF is this!”, crack you up again, give you a very weird feeling when it suddenly ends and you figure that its time to leave the theatre (if you understand it – at least I did), and its nothing you will expect.

I appreciate it, I’m not really sure if I like it, its a Coen fan must-see… But I definately don’t regret watching it at all…

I’d give this movie 7/10 on my scale (10/10 on the OMFG WTF THIS IS WEIRD! scale.)

Check out these quotes from the movie, and TRY to look for a relation. The result will be… NOTHING!

Cradle of Filth: Honey & Sulphur Video Released!

Cradle of Filth have released a music video for the single “Honey and Sulphur” from their latest album Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder.”

Nothing more to be said. Here’s the video, which I think is pretty awesome. I don’t get why a lot of people hate this album, but as a Cradle fan I sure did like it, of course more than Thornography. It’s a little bit different from the old stuff, but its less of a deviation than Thornography, so I’ll give them the next album to come back 😛

Enjoy.

Back In The Day…

Don’t criticize the title, I know I wasn’t born back then… but do I look like I care??

Anyways, here’s a vintage video of Metallica playing “For Whom The Bell Tolls” from Seattle 1989. Old is Gold!! 😀

Reason? None, found it, and posted it. Thanks for the concern…

Just loved it, and Kirk’s solo is amazing in the end too…
